Leviathan Barleywine

With its assertive hop bitterness, delicious malt flavor and long, dry, hoppy finish, Leviathan Barleywine is a brew of mythic proportions. Dark amber, rich, and malty with a most very hearty alcohol strength, it is capable of soothing the savage beast in us all.

Leviathan rises out of Pale, Carastan, and Chocolate malts with monstrous additions of Chinook hops for bitterness and Cascade hops for flavor and aroma. This vintage ale finishes quite dry after a long maturation period. As it comes of age in the keg, subtle flavors of sherry, pear, and roasted nuts will develop.

A hearty winter warmer, Leviathan stands as a classic example of the honored barleywine style. Its robust power can be overwhelming. Consequently, we recommend that this ale be enjoyed in moderation. Imbibe Leviathan Barleywine at your ease and enjoy the full, complex flavor as the glass slowly warms in your hand.

Old Ruffian Barley Wine

Old Ruffian is a hefty, hop-forward Barley Wine. Seemingly mellow at first sniff, with its subtle fruit aromas and complex caramel sweetness, this deep mahogany-hued ale quickly shows its true character marked by bold hop flavors and massive hop bitterness. Old Ruffian’s rich, slightly creamy, caramel malt mouthfeel balances its grapefruit, pine, and floral hop flavors, working wonders on your palate.

A mind-numbing 90 International Bittering Units (IBUs).

Bigfoot

Bigfoot Ale is an award-winning example of the traditional barleywine ale style. It boasts a dense, fruity bouquet; an extremely rich, intense palate; and a deep, reddish-brown color. This ale is superbly balanced between an almost overpowering maltiness and a wonderfully bittersweet hoppiness.

“…Bigfoot captures the imagination, and its character is as big as the name implies, with a huge hoppiness in its earthy aroma, a chewy palate, and a great depth of flavor.”

RUDYARD’S RARE

Taste: Very drinkable; for an ale this ‘big’, it strikes a pleasing balance between malt and hop influences. Rich, warm, complex–a mouthful of all the best components of the ale-maker’s art. Serving Suggestions: Probably most suitable as an ‘aperitif’–an ale to savor and sip after any hearty meal. (However, enjoyed all by itself, this beer will go a long way toward taking the chill off a cold
Winter’s day!)

Old Guardian Barley Wine

A perfect example of all that is big and bold in beer, Old Guardian's malt character weighs in with a huge 11.26% alc.vol. and is accented by a near-critical level of hops.APPEARANCE: Clear, amber, light colored head. AROMA: Hops with complex fruit and sweet malt. Burnt caramel, sugar. FLAVOR: Begins very sweet but hops and alcohol swoop in to balance and finish is bitter. Needs some age to mold different flavors. PALATE: Very full-bodied with good carbonation level. Alcohol makes it a little hot. OVERALL: Good sipper now, a little age will do it proud!

Mirror Mirror

Inspired by Jubel 2000 and Double Bale Quail Imperial IPA, Deschutes Brewery introduces Mirror Mirror, an oak-aged barley wine and the first selection in our newly created Reserve Series. The Reserve Series is a limited offering from Deschutes Brewery, appearing once or twice a year, as inspiration and creativity grab hold of our brewers.

First brewed as a limited draft-only brand in 2004, this rendition of Mirror Mirror was good yet our brewers were hoping for more. So, in February 2005, Mirror Mirror was brewed again with amazing results. Aged four months in French Oak wine barrels, the beer continued to condition with a few days of dry hop prior to bottling in early 2006. Ten months of dedicated care have yielded a unique beer with hints of raisin and oak emerging from a rich malt base tinged with the slightest citrus hop aroma. Mirror Mirror, a beer so nice we named it twice.

Only 63 barrels of Mirror Mirror are making their way to the market so find Deschutes Brewery’s Reserve Series in specialty bottle shops as well as local pubs throughout the Northwest.

Hopped with Willamette, Styrian, Goldings and Centennial hops, Old Boardhead Barleywine finishes with a pleasant hoppiness.

Old Crustacean

In Britain, seasonal brews for winter are high in alcohol, robust, malty, and dark. The two main styles of these brews are Old Ales and Barleywines. As the name suggests, barleywines are similar to wines in alcohol and need aging but are derived from grain, not the grape. Rogue's barleywine is described by beer expert Stuart Ramsey as: "A masterful, intense creation from brewer John Maier....it has achieved a depth and complexity usually associated with well-ages strong ales. I hope the brewery bottles some before it disappears." We call it the cognac of beers. An unfiltered and unfined Barleywine. Intense, robust, malty and dark. The cognac of beers. A hugh beer in a little bottle, this is a beer designed for sipping.

Old Crustacean is brewed with eight ingredients, Great Western Harrington, Klages, Hugh Baird Carastan and Munich Malts, Chinook and Centennial Hops, free-range coastal water and PacMan yeast. Old Crustacean is best when aged for one year. Old Crustacean is available in a new 750-ml ceramic swingtop bottle (replacing the much older 7-ounce and more recent 12 ounce XS-line package) and on draft.
